Begumpet (Begum petta or Begum's Village) is a neighborhood in Hyderabad, India.


History

Begumpet is named after the daughter of the second Nizam, Basheer Ul-Unnisaa Begum , who received it as part of her wedding dowry was married to the second Amir of Paigah The Shums ul Umra Amir e Kabir 1. Later this entire village of Begumpet was received by Shahzadi Jahandaar un-nisa Begum also known as H.E.Lady Vikar ul Umra daughter of H.H Nawab Afzal ud Dowla Bahadur the fifth Nizam of Hyderabad for her Paandaan ka Kharcha , is one of the major commercial and residential suburbs in Hyderabad, India. The Greenlands flyover also known as Begumpet flyover connects the city of Hyderabad to this area. The Bowenpally Road in Secunderabad also provides access to the region.

Begumpet was an initially a small suburb between Hyderabad and Secunderabad. The expansion of commercial activity further north of Hyderabad as well as the airport located here has made Begumpet an urban centre of importance.
Economy

Begumpet has developed into a commercial district in Hyderabad. The region is home to many government and corporate offices. Software companies Fast Forward Technologies, Yash Technologies, Quad Asia, Verinon technologies, Pramati Techonologies are located in the area.

There are some sites with historical importance and constitute visiting places for the tourists. Paigah palaces, Spanish mosque, Hyderabad Public School (former Jagirdars college), Sir Ronald Ross Institute, built in 1895, is one such example. The institute is a famous study centre that served as a military hospital in the past. It earned reputation in the academic circles, in the state and beyond.
Landmarks

The Begumpet Airport is a major landmark of the city. The Begumpet airport is now closed for commercial flights, and is operational only for training and chartered flights only. The popular Hotel Manohar (soon to be Radisson Hotel Manohar) is located close to the airport road. Shopper's Stop, a department store chain, is a well known landmark. Other landmarks are the Hyderabad Public School located on SP road, Country Club, and the Paigah Palace, which houses the US Consulate in Hyderabad. Begumpet once used to have the tallest building in South India with 13 floors called Jaal Mahal, destroyed by Aurangzeb, the last Mughal emperor.
Transport

Begumpet Railway Station is a junction for the local train service known as the Hyderabad MMTS and provides connectivity to various parts of the city especially to the IT hub Madhapur, as well as the state.

The state-owned APSRTC runs the city bus service, connecting to all the major centers of the city.

Autos and taxis provide convenient transport. There are bus stops opposite to the Hyderabad Public School, and also opposite Shopper's stop mall. To ease traffic flow on the main road, a foot-over-bridge at HPS is now operational.

Education
Hyderabad Public School

The Hyderabad Public School (H.P.S) is regarded as one of the best schools in Hyderabad. The Gitanjali group of schools in Begumpet comprises four schools: Gitanjali senior school, Gitanjali junior school, Gitanjali devshala and Gitanjali devashray. Gitanjali is regarded as one of the best schools in India.

Mahila Dhyan Vidya Peet is a government aided institution having a school as well as a college. Indira Priya Darshini Government Degree College for Women, Begumpet is also located in the district. There is also a college for visually challenged people located here.
